Sail to Prevail

Sail To Prevail (sailtoprevail.org) creates opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to overcome adversity through therapeutic sailing.

We are extraordinarily grateful to the Watch Hill Yacht Club Sailing Association for playing such a meaningful part in the success of these 1,000+ children with disabilities, from Rhode Island and neighboring communities.

Aboard our adapted sailboats, our participants, through our unique sport of sailing, learn important life skills such as teamwork to accomplish a task, leadership skills while steering the boat with a tiller, and self-confidence to choose a destination that enables the whole team aboard the boat to reach their destination. They are powerfully encouraged by peer-to-peer learning and camaraderie, along with our specially trained instructors. Our goal is to have every participant perform individual tasks aboard the boat, to their highest potential, resulting in a meaningful and positive learning experience, albeit physically, mentally or psychologically. Participation in this popular southern New England activity provides inclusion into our “Ocean State” sport. The innate joy of sailing combined with the excitement of success and sense of accomplishment increases their overall effectiveness in life. These individuals apply their new-found confidence to conquering challenges in other facets of their daily lives.

“Thank you for such a wonderful day... Perfection! Jake's smile when he returned was worth its weight in gold. Jake, my grandson, has not stopped describing his sailing experiences to all he meets. You have given a young boy the enjoyment of feeling capable of competing with his peers on an equal footing… an unusual experience with his physical difficulties. It is such a pleasure for me to see Jake truly enjoy a sport. I wish there was some magical way for me to convey to you what this trip has meant to him and what beautiful memories he will have to share with other children in the future. You made my little guy very happy and, if possible, his grandma even happier. Fondly, Jill” -Grandparent of 10-year-old Jake who had birth defects making it difficult for him to walk

“My favorite part about sailing is being on the water. I like the splash and the wind in my hair!” - Grace, age 16, (Down syndrome)
